It is called
bisphenol A, or BPA. The chemical is currently under much scrutiny and debate
because some animal studies have suggested it can interact with the way
hormones work in the body. Now, there is news from the University of Cincinnati
that plastic bottles release the chemical bisphenol A faster when they’re
exposed to hot water. Researchers analyzed plastic bottles and the bottles were
tested over seven days to simulate normal use. The results showed that the
amount of BPA released was the same for cool and room temperature water, but
much higher amounts were released when the bottles were exposed to boiling
water.
