Effective Treatment for PMS

PMS, or Premenstrual Syndrome, used to be something that was taken lightly. It was not taken seriously. It was considered quote on quote ‘in a woman’s mind.’ Well, studies have shown, and time has shown, that this is a real problem and it can respond to treatment. One of the most effective treatments for PMS actually is to try and find out in the cycle what’s going on, and give medications that can affect hormones. Antidepressant medications can help in severe cases. There are certain ones, like SSRIs, that are very effective.

Important Research About the Causes of Eating Disorders in Girls and Boys

There is very important new information that could affect the way eating disorders are treated.  According to research from the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, boys and girls develop eating disorders for different reasons.  That's important because it could have a direct impact on choosing treatments.  According to the research, frequent dieting and trying to look like persons in the media are predictors of binge eating in females of all ages.  In males, negative comments about weight by fathers are predictive of starting binge eating.  It's a very interesting study showing the differences between the sexes.

Battling Anxiety

Anxiety is one of those situations where people actually start to feel the world closing in on them. One of the problems with anxiety is there is an overriding sense, a sense of pressure that needs release which may not be coming. Anxiety, and dealing with it, is one of the major things that psychiatrists look at. They try to figure out how the body and brain works and what they can do to treat it. Clearly, it is something that requires attention and you deserve to be treated.

SSRI Antidepressant Use in Teens

There continues to be a serious debate in psychiatry. Does the use of antidepressant medications help teens, and does it help them with the condition, or do they increase a teen risk of committing suicide? Back in 2004, the Food and Drug Administration included what is known as a black box warning on a group of antidepressants called the SSRIs to alert healthcare providers to an increased risk of suicides in children and teens. New research revealed that information from 24 overall trials in over 4,500 pediatric patients taking one of nine antidepressant medications found that only one trial, funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, found a significant increase in suicides and that was more than fourfold. However, when all 24 studies were combined, there was no increase. The conclusion? This is not a declaration of safety, but a further warning that these medications need to be used under careful supervision, if at all.

Exercise, Aging and Arm Pain

You might notice as you get older that you get more aches and pains. One of the places you get them is in the arm. If you’re not used to throwing or shooting or whatever, and you go out and attempt to do something, perhaps you’re hammering nails, and you haven’t done it in a while, your arms are not used to being stressed like that, and your muscles clearly are not used to being put in that position. The arm pain can be very frustrating. Make sure you ice down after every time you exercise. That will make a big difference in helping fight arm pain.

Breast Cancer Can Affect Women at Any Age

Breast cancer affects one out of eight women.  If you are a woman, it is very important that you realize that breast cancer can attack at any time.  Breast self-examinations, getting the doctor to examine your breasts, and mammography; these are all important things.  In addition to that, you want to be as aggressive as you possibly can in treatment if it's necessary.

Marital Difficulties and Stress

Depending on what study you read, the statistics are frightening.  Not only is there a high divorce rate in this country, but the stats tell us there are many couples in difficult marriages with stress.  If you are in one of those marriages where you can't get through the day without fighting with your spouse, continuing research by Ohio State researchers suggests it could be taking a toll on your health.  Here's what they've found…couples who regularly battle it out have elevated stress levels that affect their bodies' wound healing capacity.  This is particularly important during times of illness and recovery from surgery. Psychiatrists and psychologists have known this for quite some time just by watching patients in various situations.  Of course, stress affects us whether we are married or not.  The repetitive stress of family illness, or financial worries, or virtually any cause, can take its toll.
