Important Research About the Causes of Eating Disorders in Girls and Boys

There is very important new information that could affect the way eating disorders are treated.  According to research from the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, boys and girls develop eating disorders for different reasons.  That's important because it could have a direct impact on choosing treatments.  According to the research, frequent dieting and trying to look like persons in the media are predictors of binge eating in females of all ages.  In males, negative comments about weight by fathers are predictive of starting binge eating.  It's a very interesting study showing the differences between the sexes.

Eating Disorders Can Go Unnoticed

Eating disorders are often portrayed as dramatic problems that are impossible to miss, leading to disastrous outcomes.  There is no doubt that there are many cases like this, but in most cases, eating disorders go unnoticed for prolonged periods of time.  Both anorexia and bulimia can be hidden until there are large changes in body weight and muscle wasting.  In fact, in the case of bulimia where a person binges and then purges themselves of food, it can be totally missed.  A major point to understand about eating disorders is that they are psychological problems.  They're not necessarily all about weight.  There is a distorted body image that takes control and it can affect behavior, but the important thing to realize here is that each case is individual and we need to get help, sometimes at the psychiatric level.

Realities of the Freshman 15

It is called the freshman 15 and as the school year approaches and girls are considering going to college, it is a very realistic prospect. There are several things happening here. First, for many kids it is a time to be away from home, to eat on your own. Secondly, there’s usually a food card of some sort, a voucher which allows you to eat unlimited food. Finally, institutional food with gravy often is a cheaper type of food to provide than healthy foods. The combination can be deadly and includes a lot of weight gain, including that freshman 15.
