There are
difficulties in today's stressful economy and one of the big problems is the
stress after being laid off. Many people have to deal with the problems
associated with that and it can be very difficult. That's one of the
problems with a stressful economy. People sometimes build their identity
in the work they're doing and the jobs they have. When those jobs are
taken away, it is a situation where someone can actually become depressed
because of it.

Worrying Too Much
Many people
spend far too much of their time worrying. We worry about our families,
our money, our futures. We even worry about how much we worry. The
health effects of all this worry can be devastating. The stress of worry
can increase our blood pressure, the risk of heart disease, even cancer.
According to the Trust for America's Health, we could be hurting our health by
worrying about our health. Now here are their statistics, statistics that
are being looked at looked at very seriously by the American Medical
Association. Thirty-seven percent of people worry about cancer as their
top health concern, 14% heart disease, 13% obesity, and 11% chemical
terrorism. Worry is appropriate in small doses. It can help us
anticipate problems down the line. But let's face it, you don't want
to overdo it.

Pressure and Stress Can Influence Allergies
Can pressure
lead to allergic symptoms? It’s a very interesting concept. If you’re under
pressure at work, and feel that there’s a great deal of stress on you, it,
actually, can cause your immune system to work extra hard. There’s a theory out
there that people under pressure actually begin to have more and more problems
with their allergies. It’s a concept that’s very interesting, but experts do find it
somewhat true that when people are under pressure, they have that difficulty
and it’s a difficulty that’s often tough to control.

Helping Kids with Teen Angst
It is called
teen angst and there is no doubt that teenagers have a lot more stress, or at
least what they perceive as stress. But if you look at the reality, it is
a tough time to be a teenager. There are many issues that teenagers face
that really have to be dealt with psychologically. Communication with
parents can be key. It's difficult as a parent, but if you can try to
communicate with your teenager, you're going to help them through many of these
times. Teens are searching for your guidance.

Relaxation Techniques Can Protect Against Stress
There is no
doubt that stress plays a major role in all of our lives. Stress can
actually have a major impact and our body's reaction to it is not necessarily
always a bad thing. If you think about our development as a species, we use
stress and the 'fight or flight' response to ward off predators to stay
alive. Of course, when the predators are a fear of losing a job or
failing a test of some sort, that same mechanism of dealing with stress can be
a problem. That's why relaxation techniques like meditation can
help. According to a report in the International Journal of
Psychophysiology, meditation might help protect college students against stress
and improve their ability to learn. It makes sense and during the formal
study, students who meditated showed positive results on brain studies
including greater breadth of planning, thinking, and perception of the
environment.

The Stress Hormone Cortisol Can Affect Your Health
At the turn of
the 19th century, a book was written by a physician trained at that time with
the best medical knowledge it could offer. A key part of the book was a
concept; it was a concept that happiness and the ability to give to others and
live in harmony could lead to a long and healthy life. At the time, they
did not know about hormones like Cortisol, the stress hormone, but as we look
at the complex relationship between our brain and our body, it's becoming abundantly
clear that the words written over a hundred years ago are true. We
definitely do not thrive under negative energy and stress and excessive Cortisol
levels can raise blood pressure and add increasing levels of anxiety.
Long-term wear and tear can clearly take its toll and we can measure a direct
relationship between hormone release and cardiac changes. The doctors of
that day used physical exams and observations to make their conclusions, and it
worked in many cases.

Research on Serotonin and Depression
We have known
for quite some time that depression and serotonin pathways in the brain are
connected in some way. Many of our treatments for depression are based on
serotonin and its metabolism in the body. How depression and serotonin may be
linked? Well, according to information in the journal Science, interactions
between a brain protein and a serotonin receptor seem to have a relationship
with depression as well as obsessive-compulsive disorder, drug addiction,
anxiety, aggression and sleep disorders. Now, without getting too technical,
there are aspects of the finding that are very important. The true value might
come from the fact that as we learn more about serotonin, we will be able to
attack it more specifically. Remember, we use a lot of serotonin-based drugs.
We understand how they work and we can definitely put them in position where
they can make a difference for people.

Daily Pressures and Anxiety
All of us face
anxiety but for some women it can be a particularly serious problem; especially
if it causes what we call emotional paralysis. Some people become so tense and
so anxious about the pressures of daily life that they aren’t able to seriously
evaluate the pros and cons of certain things, and they ultimately don’t make
any decision. There are medications for anxiety. If you find that you are under
the continuous strain of anxious feelings and anxiety, check with your doctor.

Women Are Under More Stress Than Ever
There's no doubt
that all of us experienced stress throughout the centuries of the world.
Sometimes stress is worse than other times, but there is no doubt that women
are facing new and aggressive forms of stress. The stress they are facing
is often from trying to work, maintaining a home life, and trying to deal with
the pressures of both. There is the stress associated with the fact that
there are pressures at work that were not seen before. The economy is an
issue. All of these things are stress which indicates that women need to
take the time to rest and deal with it.

Recognizing School Anxiety
Many children
suffer from school anxiety. School anxiety is actually shown in a number of
ways. Kids will get headaches or they’ll get stomach aches. They’ll be so
concerned about arriving at school. They really are concerned about how they
feel and they try to come up with excuses to avoid it. School anxiety is a
normal problem. Most children feel it at one point or another. Often it is a
warning sign that bullying is occurring or in some way the child is being put
in a situation where they’re uncomfortable. Take those signs seriously.

The Key to Happiness…Finding Balance Between Work and Home
The balance
between work and home can be something that can be very difficult to manage. You
have to understand that work will never be completely done in each of these
arenas. You have to look at both opportunities as a way to try to excel, but at
the same time, to be realistic. Work at home is something which can be
monitored and it can be measured. You have to realize, it goes on again and
again for a long period of time. The work in the workplace is often judged by
outside sources. You must keep the balance.

Battling Anxiety
Anxiety is one
of those situations where people actually start to feel the world closing in on
them. One of the problems with anxiety is there is an overriding sense, a sense
of pressure that needs release which may not be coming. Anxiety, and dealing
with it, is one of the major things that psychiatrists look at. They try to
figure out how the body and brain works and what they can do to treat it.
Clearly, it is something that requires attention and you deserve to be treated.

Anxiety Is an Overlooked Source of Pain
Anxiety is a
source of pain that we often overlook. Imagine being so anxious that you're
constantly worrying. This actually can happen and many people deal with
it and it's a source of frustration. For those with anxiety, they you
need to take a look at what the causes are and what's happening. Anxiety
can be dealt with quite effectively through medication, but also looking at
what is actually triggering the problem. If you can examine that and
understand it, sometimes it makes a big difference.

Getting Treatment for Anxiety
Anxiety is very difficult to deal with. We, as physicians, often turn to medications and medications are a good option, but you have to look at the underlying issues surrounding the anxiety. Are there problems that need greater treatment? I believe that counseling is a critical part of any psychiatric issue. One of the problems with anxiety is people are afraid to see the doctor. They don't want to admit they have a weakness. They're afraid it will somehow follow them throughout their life. Believe me, when it comes to anxiety, I believe you have to look at all these issues, but don't be afraid of treatment.
We appreciate
all your comments.
