Rebound Headaches

It is called rebound headache.  What happens in rebound headaches is someone takes medications to treat headache and, essentially, they become so used to that medication that when they don't have it, they actually get a headache going through withdrawal without that medicine.  Rebound headache is a common problem, but it is one that is not diagnosed that often for the very reason that many people are not aware that this is an issue.  So, rebound headache is something that doctors often look at and know that it can be a serious issue.

Dealing with Stress Headaches

There are several kinds of headaches.  While many people say they suffer from migraines, the most common headache is called a stress headache.  Causes include stress, skipping meals, irregular sleep habits, or certain foods.  One of the first things many people do after suffering a headache is reach for a pain reliever in the medicine cabinet, but that's not always the best idea.  In fact, there are other simple things you can do.  Lie down in a dark, quiet room and try to sleep.  Also, try to figure out what led to the headache.  In addition, you should try to avoid things that are problematic and bother you.  One idea is a headache log where you can record when the headache first appears, the time each one happens, and where the pain is felt.  You get the idea.  Its common sense and it's trying to figure out the best way to approach a problem that can be chronic.

Recognizing Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches are not a problem for as many people as you think. Now, we’re not saying migraine headaches are not a big problem; they are. But, many people who have tension headaches and other types of headaches say they have migraines. One of the ways you can tell if you have migraine is you get a strange sense, or an aura, a feeling that the headache is about to start. That’s classic for a migraine; something like bright lights or a strange smell. Secondly, the pain is only relieved if you get into a quite area…into a room. Then it starts to relax and reduce. That’s one of the ways we deal with it as well.

Caffeine In Moderation Is Okay

Is caffeine good for you?  The answer is quite simple.  In moderation, there doesn't appear to be any problems with caffeine.  It's like anything else.  When you overdo it, when you have too much caffeine or too much of a stimulant, it can affect your mood, it can cause headaches as a result of rebound, and it can also cause some systemic problems that researchers are looking at more and more.  But, again, in moderation, coffee is fine, tea is fine, sodas are fine.  You just have to be careful.  Physicians do worry about a lot of these stimulant products such as 5-Hour Energy drinks and other ones because you have to very careful about those sudden boosts.

How Do You Know If You’re Having A Tension Headache?

Tension headaches are frustrating, but they’re relatively easy to diagnose. Here’s what happens in a tension headache. People will say they have pain in the muscles of their head, like on the side of their head, or on the back of their head, but there’s a key warning sign. It gets worse as the day goes on, or as a stressful activity continues. So, if someone goes to a job that they feel is stressful, the headache gets worse as the day goes on. Tension headache could also be confused with sinus headache, and it can be confused with having a bad prescription in your glasses, but all of those things can be dealt with.

Evaluating Headaches in Children

When a child has a headache, you have to really explore what’s going on. Is it a psychological issue, or is it more than that it? Is it a problem associated with sinus pressure? Is it something to do with vision? Do they need glasses, or are they having headaches because it could be a neurological issue? The bottom line is you need to do careful exploration. If the headache is any more than a transient or short-term thing, you need to make sure you talk with a physician. Get the evaluation that’s necessary because we’re talking about neurological issues, and you can’t mess around with them.

Dealing With The Pain Of Migraine Headaches

Migraine headaches are very interesting. They’re difficult to treat because in many cases it’s tough to tell if someone has a migraine. The thing about migraine headache that’s important to realize is there’s often some sort of aura, some sort of sense that something is not right. Perhaps there’s a strange smell. The smell of coffee when there is none, or a zigzagging of lights, that sort of thing. Migraine headaches can be treated with medication, especially if they’re treated what we call prophylactically, before the headache occurs because you sense it’s coming on. It’s a very good way to approach it.
