Anorexia is a
major health problem in teens and it all has to do with body self-image.
Clearly, what we’re finding from Hollywood is the message that anorexia is not
that bad of a thing…being thin is a wonderful thing. The reality is it is a big
problem that has to be dealt with. If you have a child who is too thin, or
losing weight and doesn’t really have a good reason for it, talk with them, but
get help. It is the psychiatric help that can be essential.

When Exercise Becomes Compulsive
Exercise is a
great thing, but when you see compulsive exercise, it’s a problem. That is
where a teenager, in particular, begins to exercise because they feel pressure
to stay in shape. Maybe they want their body to be better. Maybe they want to
be better athletes. Maybe they have anorexia or bulimic-type tendencies and
they’re worried about their self-image. Exercise is great, but when it starts
to take on a life of its own, that’s when you have to be concerned. Counsel the
child. Try to find out why they’re exercising so much and if there’s changes
that need to be made.

Psychological Aspect of Anorexia
Anorexia is a
serious medical problem, but it’s a medical problem with a psychological
overlie. People who have anorexia actually have a distorted body image. They
feel that there is something wrong with them. That they weigh too much. As a
result, they eat far less and can get into big trouble. Even when they are
losing weight, they continue to think they weigh too much, and that’s part of
the problem with anorexia. People who have anorexia nervosa have to have the
psychological issues dealt with as well as the weight issues.

Eating Disorders Can Go Unnoticed
Eating disorders
are often portrayed as dramatic problems that are impossible to miss, leading
to disastrous outcomes. There is no doubt that there are many cases like
this, but in most cases, eating disorders go unnoticed for prolonged periods of
time. Both anorexia and bulimia can be hidden until there are large
changes in body weight and muscle wasting. In fact, in the case of
bulimia where a person binges and then purges themselves of food, it can be
totally missed. A major point to understand about eating disorders is
that they are psychological problems. They're not necessarily all about
weight. There is a distorted body image that takes control and it can
affect behavior, but the important thing to realize here is that each case is
individual and we need to get help, sometimes at the psychiatric level.

Anorexia Is a Psychological Issue
Anorexia is not
as much of a physical problem as it is a psychological problem. For young
women, in particular, who suffer from anorexia, what we find is that in time,
it is that image, that feeling of self-assuredness, that sense of "I am
okay" that is broken and needs to be fixed. That is what we need to
do. We need to look at a person and find out what is the reason why they
don't feel good about themselves..

Anorexia Is Rooted in Body-Image Issues
Anorexia is a serious health problem; one which has a strong psychological component. I think one of the things that we really need to talk about is the fact that when someone has weight loss that is of a type that makes you think of anorexia, you have to think of what their body self-image is, how they feel about themselves, because correcting that sometimes is the best way to correct the weight issues. Believe me, it is not easy, but it's important to try.
