There is a
report from the University of Pittsburgh which suggested that students should
be exposed to knowledge of the dangers of alcohol as early as fourth grade.
There are several reasons for this. First, kids watch TV and ads marketing
alcohol. Those ads are more prominent than ever. Then there is the information
from a review of state and national surveys which found that among typical
fourth-graders, 10% had already had more than a sip of alcohol and 7% had a
drink in the past year. The percent of children who have used alcohol increases
with age and doubles between 4th and 6th grades.

Reducing Symptoms of Heartburn
Heartburn can be
very difficult to treat. One of the problems with heartburn is the fact it is
repetitive and it really can become annoying. Many people find that they ignore
the symptoms. They try to change their foods. Doctors can tell you this much…there
are several things that will make heartburn worse, including aspirin, alcohol,
caffeine and tobacco. They clearly have an effect on heartburn. There are certain
things to help reduce heartburn like raising the head of your bed because when
you lay down heartburn can be worse.

Alcohol Can Lead to Stomach Irritation
Alcohol can lead
to stomach irritation. This isn't necessarily an allergic reaction, but
it's a direct reaction to a toxin, of sorts. Alcohol, when it gets into
the stomach, actually causes an increase in secretion of stomach acid…that
increased secretion of stomach acid can cause tenderness and belly pain.
The belly pain can be treated essentially by trying to neutralize the acid; you
would use Tums, Rolaids or products like that. But over time, it can have
a disastrous effect, if you continue drinking.

Reducing Heartburn Pain
Heartburn is
very frustrating because one of the problems is it is hard to distinguish from
actual heart pain. The thing about heartburn that you have to realize is there
are certain things that make heartburn worse; acid, alcohol, caffeine, tobacco.
All of those things will build up stomach acid, and as they do, it can make
that heartburn worse. One of the things I believe that’s very important in
dealing with heartburn is you also elevate the head of the bed. If you go to
bed, make sure you actually have your head a little higher. Gravity will help
you deal with it. That certainly will help with the symptoms.

People Can Be Allergic to Alcohol
There are people
who are allergic to alcohol, believe it or not. There are also people who are
hypersensitive to the effects of alcohol. Many people who have these problems
actually can have the feelings of euphoria or depression that are associated
with alcohol, and they have it at lower levels of the alcohol. The other thing is
that many people could be allergic to the by-product in the distilling of the
alcohol.. It’s something that a lot of people don’t think about, and the only
way they know is when they relate it to the times they have been drinking.

Long-Term Study Looks at Alcohol Consumption and Abuse
You may not
believe this, but according to a 50-year study spanning from 1948 to 2003,
researchers from the Framingham Heart Study found that people with alcohol
abuse problems seem to be holding steady. They examined more than 8,000
health records from successive generations of people who participated in the
research. They found that those born more recently tend to drink less
over time. The average alcohol consumption of middle-aged men decreased
from 2.2 drinks a day to about 1.5 drinks a day. In middle-aged women,
alcohol consumption decreased from one drink a day to 3/4 of a drink a day.
There is another interesting finding related to drinking habits. The
younger generation drank less hard liquor and more beer, though all generations
tended to move towards wine as they got older.

Alcohol Consumption Over the Years
