A lot of people
don't understand what heartburn is, but it's real simple to explain. The
esophagus goes from the mouth down into the stomach. There's a connection
there and there's a valve that keeps the stomach acid in the stomach. The
stomach has lots of acid in it because it has to churn up the food in there and
do its job. Sometimes, that acid pushes up, but, that valve keeps it from
going into the esophagus. If you have a problem with the valve, or maybe
you lay down and it can leak in, it gets into that esophagus which does not
have a lining for acid and it hurts and you feel heartburn.

What is Heartburn?
Heartburn is a
health problem that is annoying. Basically, here’s what happens in heartburn.
The esophagus is a tube that goes from the mouth down into the stomach. When
acid escapes from the stomach, it goes into the esophagus. The esophagus lining
is not meant for acid. It can’t buffer it the way the stomach can. As a result,
a person feels the pain, and with that pain of the heartburn comes an
irritation. That gastric irritation can be extremely painful at night.

Understanding Heartburn
What is heartburn
and why does it occur? Part of heartburn is gravitational in effect because
when you lay down, the stomach acid actually can move through the stomach, past
the valve if the valve has any defect, and get into the esophagus. That
esophagus is not meant to sustain acid and when that acid gets in there, it
causes irritation and pain. That is what you perceive as heartburn.
